Rug size guide

Living Room

  • The front legs of your sofa and chairs should fit on top of the rug.
  • When in doubt, go big. Choosing a too-small rug can make your space feel smaller than it is.
  • For gracious spaces, aim for a generously sized fit so all furniture sits completely within its borders.
  • Allow for at least 12" of floorspace between the rug and walls to ensure the rug defines the space and doesn't look like wall-to-wall carpeting.
  • Recommended materials for the Living Room include: wool, indoor performance and natural fiber rugs such as jute and sisal due to their durability and softness.

Bedroom

  • Leave at least 18" to 24" of floorspace exposed around the edges of the rug.
  • For a budget-friendly option, use one rug to fill in the open area next to an off-centered bed. Or, place two equally sized smaller rugs on either side of a centered bed.
  • Twin beds? Choose a large rug that fits comfortably underneath both or a smaller rug that covers the lower two-thirds of both beds.

Kitchen

  • A small 2' x 3' rug can accent your stove or sink, provide a soft spot to stand, and give even the tiniest kitchens a pop of color and pattern.
  • If you have an island or galley kitchen, consider placing a runner to visually draw the eye.
  • Pro tip: Many of our runners come in two lengths (2.5' x 8' and 2.5' x 12') so be sure to measure before ordering.
  • Leave at least six inches of space between the edge of a rug and the wall.

Dining Room

  • The rug should be centered under the table but still large enough that chairs fit comfortably on it even when pulled out.
  • Leave at least 18" to 24" between chair backs and the rug edge.
  • Opt for the rug size that accommodates the largest length or diameter of the table.
